A friend of mine put a post on Facebook not too long ago with a very nice example of a “good” vs “bad” email. The first example was something like, “So, did you send me that file yet?” The second was, “Good morning, I hope you’re having a wonderful day. I’m writing to inform you that the agency has requested a file to complete your application. Once I have it, I’ll send it off and then inform you when they get back to me.” (or something like that). Basically the message was that if you aren’t deliberately being excessively kind, you come across as a jerk… but I have to remind myself of this particularly when I get tired. I think there are always such “rush, rush, rush” expectations at work, that people feel they’ll be scolded for taking the time to write a professional email. Thanks for the nice comment!
