A few months ago when Medium announced that writers would be able to earn money through membership referrals, I didn’t think much about it. Earning opportunities always come and go, and I thought it would be in my best interest to focus on content.

I shared the link exactly one time on Facebook and then forgot about it.

However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to discover that several people have signed up for Medium through my referral link. This has resulted in an additional payment to what I get for being a member of the creator fellowship.

Also, I’ve been amazed to discover that this payment is recurring! I’ll continue to get a portion of your membership fee for as long as you are a Medium member! Medium was clear about that when they launched the program, of course, but in a holdover from my grade school days I just can’t make myself pay attention when anyone announces anything.

Writing is one of those occupations where you’re always faced with uncertainty. Sometimes you have a really solid month, other times you just can’t seem to get anything to take off. Opportunities come and go, but the bills always remain.

I really appreciate those of you who have signed on to Medium through my referral link. The support means a lot and it allows me to keep raging away at the various social issues that confront everyone (whether they choose to recognize them or not).

It’s been a little over a year since I really started dedicating my time to Medium. This platform has been a revelation, and it’s truly wonderful to write for such an intelligent audience (and the occasional dolt, but I quickly block those).

Medium has also allowed me to mostly give up on Facebook where I’d only ever been spinning my wheels. These days, my routine is that I wake up, find a news story that irritates me, write a 7 minute article, and then get on to my busy schedule of less productive tasks.

Honestly, it’s liberating. There are daily injustices that need to be addressed, and if I don’t write my article I sit around stewing on them all day.
