I always find it fun to play the game of, "Is this something this character would say?" If it's not, and the information is important to your story, you have to either find an existing character that would say it, or invent one. Actually, once you've got the characters figured out, sometimes the stories write themselves. Some characters are easy, they have a defining characteristic. Spock is a good example.
