I disagree strongly with the assertion that the publishing industry does not dictate how stories are told. The publishing industry wields enormous power and can effectively bury books that don't support the power narratives they wish to promote. 'Manufacturing Consent' by Noam Chomsky goes into great detail on the mechanism that is used. I'm sorry to put it so bluntly, but you're very wrong.
