I feel that American society is only allowed to satirize marginalized groups. The powerful groups that are deserving of a good satirical kicking, don't allow themselves to be the target of serious satire. They make the appearance of allowing it, but if you really go after them, they put an end to it (that's just my perception).

I struggle with what's considered common sense, particularly in the US. I've come to believe that what most Americans believe is "common sense" is actually "unconscious bias." I often struggle with fears of doing more harm than good.

Thanks for your comments. They got me thinking about the difference between the UK and the US once again. We're self-censoring over here. I stopped thinking, "you can't seriously believe that" the instant traitor trump got elected. But perhaps my concerns about satire are excessive.
