I hear you! I wrote about this topic for my column on Writing Cooperative recently:

I was kind of panicking, so I did some short stories and entered some contests. There are a lot of markets out there that will pay $100 or so for an article. I think all writers should be submitting 2-10 of those per month. It takes a while for the checks to come in, but they're always a nice surprise when they do.

I also used to work as a content writer with Steady Content. I think my mistake was that I did it full time for about a year. If you picked up a couple jobs a week for an extra $300 or $400 a month, it might not be so bad. https://www.steadycontent.com/writers/
