I think I’m wrestling with the same problem. There’s so much hate speech that’s considered “normal” and any appeal to tolerance for marginalized groups is denounced. I really don’t know how to combat this. My own experience leads me to believe that if you get up in public and start talking about these things, you’ll see a lot of nodding heads. But you’re right, people are afraid to speak out with you. I think we can change that, but it’s going to take a long time.
