I think it would be possible to make a legal definition that would protect all doctors and women by defining pregnancy as a medical emergency. I mean, the US has the highest maternal mortality rate of any nation in the industrialized world, so it's a valid argument. The lawyers would have to get involved... then they would have to establish precident, which is always tough with incompetent conservative judges sitting on the bench.
