I think it's interesting how the debate took shape when their portfolios consisted of Jaws and Close Encounters, versus Star Wars and American Graffiti. Today, I think it's an unfair (perhaps misleading) comparison. Spielberg obviously finds the greatest joy in directing, Lucas likes to tinker in every part of the process of filmmaking (and tends to hire out directors). So, Spielberg is a director and Lucas is a filmmaker. Of course, they worked together on Raiders. I like that, ultimately, it was cooperation rather than competition between the two.
