I think it's interesting, too, the blatant disrespect that plantation owners showed for their own religion with things like marriage bans. There's no limit to the depths of their cruelty. Schools should emphasize that. Wouldn't it be interesting to teach about the plantation era in the context of their blatant hypocrisy to their own stated beliefs? That would be a nice segue into the hypocrisy that still exists today.
