I think there's a deep human need to tell their story. A book like "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is a memoir that helps dismantle oppressive institutions. In my experience, many of the self-published memoirs I've read are like that. People feel a need to tell the truth about their lives, and it's stunning how often that truth completely contradicts the established narrative most of our society chooses to believe. Thanks for the comment (are you a 'Mork from Ork' fan?).
