I was thinking in terms of library appearances. I do those from time to time, and usually they pay me an honorarium. If I sell 10 books, that's nice, but basically I can't make money on it because of shipping and printing costs. Even if I did a small print run of just 100 copies, if I got the unit cost down I'd actually make something on the appearance sales. This model would actually be relevant for a retired person who has the free time to drive all over the state selling books. Considering that most books don't even sell 10 copies, this kind of thinking is way ahead of the game. Thanks for the comment!
