In my state, Wisconsin, there is currently legislation about "disclosing" when AI deepfakes are used in political ads. The legislation is important, but it seems to me that there should be an effort to prevent nefarious forces from making fake videos of politicians saying horrible things--not just disclosing when it happens. Also, the legislation in Wisconsin only offered a $1,000 fine as punishment if no disclosure was made! I'm fearful of the damage that could be done on social media of deepfake videos misrepresenting what politicians stand for. I'd love to hear more thoughts on this aspect of this issue.
