It has not been my experience that Democratic communities teach a lack of respect. I think the idea of obedience to oppressive authority is often conflated with respect. When it comes to classrooms, I don't know if learning is possible unless basic human needs our met, and our society certainly doesn't do anything to ensure all children are protected.
