It took me a long time to learn the rules. I learned to write from reading, definitely not from memorizing grammatical rules. Eventually, I identified the places where I kept making mistakes and learned those rules, then I got a little better from there. I still make mistakes though. Yeah, it can be extremely discouraging when you keep being told you're making mistakes and you don't know what they are.
