Most of What I Learned in 2022

There is value in reflecting on a year. Here are some thoughts as we make our way through the last days of 2022.
This morning, after I dropped off my daughters at school, I sat down to write a note to my youngest daughter. The note was for a school project. She gave me a piece of construction paper in the shape of a light bulb. My assignment was to write her a note that she could decorate. Then her teacher is going to hang it from a tree.
As I was writing, it occurs to me that we shouldn’t need a school assignment to write notes like this. We should be saying these things every day. I do try to say those things, but I’m grateful for additional opportunities.
My daughters and my wife and my dog are special to me. Other friends and family are special too, but my immediate family is like the sun. It outshines all the other stars in the sky.
I wake up with them every morning. We eat together. I take them to piano, swimming, and basketball practice. I read to them at night.
Every night as I walk down the stairs, I call out one final, “I love you, sweet dreams,” and I wait for them to reply.
