Personally, I believe we should always be open to engaging in intellectual discourse, particularly regarding the ways influential journals are funded. Outright dismissal because of a hostile emotional response needs to be suppressed. I believe scholars should be paid for their work. Also, it's the academics who have transformed the phrase "self-publishing" into a disparagement. When you pay to have something published, you're "self-publishing." It's as simple as that.
