That's the way I feel too, but the truth is that it's not good advice to tell people to pick up a child they find. You could give that child a coat, but if you pick the child up the reality is you put yourself in legal jeopardy. I told this story to my wife (we're both teachers) and she told me you absolutely do not pick up the child. In fact, she told me I should have called the police. My first impulse was to get outside to keep the child from walking into traffic. Anyway, I wish we lived in a better world where we didn't have to walk through scenarios like this. It makes me sad and I don't have a good answer and I don't feel good about it.
