The example I used is a marriage where the parents aren't talking to each other and that hurts the child. I think that constittutes a "broken" marriage, but I think we should be focusing on the wellbeing of the child, not the term we use to highlight the problem. Also, "broken" is the legal term for why a marriage is dissolved.
