It’s appalling that the conservatives in the US are so committed to the path of oppression, and revoking affirmative action is the latest in a long list of crimes.

The more I've put my mind to the problem of America’s institutionalized racism, the more I suspect that the solution lies in dismantling many of the things we're conditioned to celebrate about our country. When we emerge from the effort to improve America, we won't have eliminated all the bad of our country and retained everything that's good. Much of what we now are conditioned to believe is "good" is an illusion cast from the shadow of the bad. In the same way an alcoholic gives up a momentary high when he chooses sobriety, America will have to give up its delusions of grandeur to defeat racism. The result will be a more humane and more stable civilization. But as you say in your essay, we have a long way to go.
