This is an unfortunate tale, but it could have been a lot worse. If you received a decent cover and didn't have to pay, that's a lot better than many authors who get caught up in bad deals. If you'd used a pen name, this would have been a good learning experience, even though it was entirely frustrating. There are good publishers that don't offer an advance, but the deck is just stacked against you with writing. Best of luck on the next project!
