What a fantastic and exhaustively researched article. This is a great piece of writing that I'll have to revisit. I remember being personally traumatized by the bizarre 'Watership Down' film. As an adult, I love the book, but there was something about the opening frames of that movie that filled me with dread (a dread that turned out to be warranted). When I was about 8, a psychotic aunt stuck me and some of my cousins in front of a television with 'A Clockwork Orange' because she'd heard "It was critically acclaimed." That too was traumatic. My final problematic experience with cinema was watching 'Poltergeist' back when it was first released. Spielberg was involved and he used his clout to give it a PG rating I think. I still can't look at frames from that film. You've got me thinking on the censorship question, I agree with you 100% that the government shouldn't dictate what adults choose within the law, but there do have to be some protections in place for children. It's a complex issue that I need to reflect on more.
