When I popped open my refurbished phone that had died, it had an after market battery. A battery only cost about $20 for that model, so I think putting in a new battery is common enough for refurbished phones. I did have a refurbished phone die after about 18 months once, but that was still less expensive than a new phone. I don't use FaceTime so I can't help you there. I prefer the inexpensive option first, and then I upgrade if it doesn't work out. Normally you're not out any money if you go inexpensive on the first go around.
