When I taught in South America, the students stood by their desks until I told them to sit down. It made me uncomfortable and I told them to stop, but they insisted on doing it. After that, i started wearing a tie every day. If they were going to show that level of respect to me, I felt I needed to return it. That's when I discovered that dressing well made me a better teacher. it sets a better tone.
